Shared Moments of Joy was conceived and written for persons in the moderate-late stages of Alzheimer's disease, when there is a noticible decline in cognitive functioning, especially short-term memory skills.
It was written in rhyme format at about a fourth grade level, so that a person who has retained some reading skills, might find satisfaction in reading themselves. Those who can no longer read alone, might enjoy the activity of being read to and the colorful pictures.
Unlike most picture books, Shared Moments of Joy is age appropriate, featuring an older woman, and written in the first person- from her perspective. It reveals her thoughts and emotions as she enjoys a day at the beach with her son. All the while, the book reinforces caregiving Gold Standards, including the importance of:

Some memories remain,
while others are gone,
What’s important today,
is to know I belong.
